What are lab tests for?

Lab tests give insight into anything that is happening in the body and are used to gather health informationThey help in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of a wide number of conditions, and a doctor may choose to run a lab test in response to any concerns you have raised during the consultation or for a status check on ongoing health issues.

What lab tests are available?

Doctors will request lab tests if necessary depending on your situation. Some of the tests doctors can request are:

  1. Blood tests to assess for a variety of conditions like cell counts, presence of electrolytes, protein, organ function, and more.
  2. Ultrasounds to view internal organs without the use of radiation.
  3. X-rays are also used to view the inside of the body, but this method does use radiation so the doctor will choose to use at their discretion.
  4. A variety of sexual health tests, which include taking swabs, giving blood, providing a urine sample, or having an internal exam.
  5. A urine sample to test for a wide variety of conditions, including diabetes or kidney diseases.
  6. Basic Metabolic Panel test to assess kidney function and electrolyte levels.
  7. A Thyroid Profile to measure hormone levels in the blood that are related to the thyroid.
  8. Pap Smear tests to screen for cervical cancer in women.

The doctor can also requisition more specialized tests if needed.

What will my in-clinic lab test appointment be like?

Appointments usually include a discussion of your medical history. The physician will talk with you about your symptoms and reason for the appointment as part of their assessment of whether a lab test is required. If the doctor agrees that you need the test, they will share a requisition form with you.

Complete this form and take it to a lab of your choice to complete the test at a time that suits you.

Once the results are available, we will notify you and share them with you. We may also request a follow-up in-clinic appointment if necessary.

How long do the lab test results usually take?

This varies depending on the lab you choose, and the type of test being done. It can range from days up to a couple of weeks. The medical staff at the lab should share the specific timings with you.
